Things You Need To Know Before Renting A Dumpster

by Mae Wallace

When you are going to have a project at home that will result in more trash and garbage than what your regular garbage cans will contain, you are going to need to rent a dumpster. While it is not a complicated thing to do, there ae a few things you should know, so you get the one you need at the best price. Here are a few things to take into consideration.

Size

Dumpsters come in sizes measured in cubic yards. This can be a bit difficult to picture, if you are not used to working with it. To give you an idea of the size, a 10-cubic yard dumpster is roughly 10 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3.5 feet high. Of course, you can stack things higher than the sides, if necessary, but the lids won't close, and things may fall out.

Weight

In addition to the dimensions of the bin, you need to find out if there is a weight limit. If you are going to be placing heavy things in the dumpster, like stones or rocks, make sure that the dumpster is rated to hold that much weight. The rental company can tell you how much weight is allowed. What the bin is made of may also determine how much weight it can hold.

Hazardous Materials

It is important to know if the dumpster can hold hazardous materials or not. In addition, the rental company will need to know what types of materials will be in the dumpster, so they can make arrangements for their proper disposal. You may need to rent a smaller bin that will be used only for these items.

Emptying

You may want to go with a smaller bin, but have it emptied more frequently. You will need to determine how much work will be done every day or every few days. Then, figure how much will be going into the dumpster. Ask the rental company how much it costs to have the bin emptied. When compared with the cost for the different sizes, you can decide if it would be less expensive to rent a large bin with fewer empties or a small bin with more empties.

Once you have determined the bin or bins you need to complete the job, check with the Public Works Department to find out if you need a permit to place the dumpster. If you do, be sure to ask the rental company if they take care of it or not. After everything is decided, a simple phone call is all that is needed to have the dumpster dropped off.
